How to introduce a new product in a market that never existed?

I'm trying to market for home automation systems for people in existing homes that need a control system, but just do not know yet.

This sounds like a project for a really good marketing team ... you may want to check marketing professors at small colleges and see if he would be interested in letting their students use it as a learning experience. The teacher can use later as a case study and you can get advice Free.

Great Product & Outstanding Price

by orickoh from on 2010-09-06
I needed an additional lamp module to expand the Home Steeings system I've had in my motorhome for over two years now. I found this kit with two lamp modules AND a new controller for the same price as each lamp module lists for! Fast shipping and works great. I use this to control a six station indirect rope lighting system in the coach.

Good value kit, jury out on Z-wave

by Neil from WA from REDMOND, WA, US on 2010-05-01
This is a very cost effective way to get into home automation. There are cheaper remote plug ins, but they probably wont be expandable to more devices, nor dim, nor have a timer in the controller. Z-wave also has PC based solutions if you want to have computer controlled lighting. For the Intermatic specifically, I asked the manufacturer about support for dimmable CFLs with these adapters and they said no, only rated for traditional bulbs, so if you only have CFL, even dimmable, it's probably safest to get the heavy duty adapters - they will only turn on/off though.I'm having some issues with Z-wave based screw in adapters - not all lights seem to turn on/off reliably so i'm wondering about whether Insteon might be a better overall solution as this can use the house wiring as well as radio.

Worth only because of low price...

by A. Balyan from Somewhere in between nowhere, OH on 2010-04-05
(Was planning for Zwave based home automation) After seeing the price drop of this set, ordered this as well as Intermatic HA09C Home Settings Wireless Handy Remote Control. Here, I am going to focus on Intermatic HA101K Home Settings Wireless Kit only,+ Price, difficult to beat. + Complete set to start the automation + Aesthetically, not bad. + Works (will discuss more in -), and good for starting the home automation project. + Works with CFL, but I am keeping the highest level (no dimming effect, but CFL are usually not for dimming)- Old DST setting. This is deal breaker for me. Although it seems just 3-weeks diff, but its almost impossible to change any setting with this remote (which is acting as master for whole Z-wave system). - Horrible, just useless, instructions. Back to first negative. Combine these 2, I dont have words. - Unreliable (OK, my plug in is behind sofa, but I am using the master remote from 3 feet to max 12 feet distance). Sometimes, you need to press few times and sometimes work with single press. Sometimes you need long press and few times, a light touch works. - Difficult to program. Not sure how, my master is programmed to switch on/off with single button (ON). Its almost impossible to change the settings, and I dont have patience to change.Baseline is, good to try and for plugins. I will be not recommend master.

Setup too hard for most users

by P. Jacobson from Minneapolis, MN on 2009-02-22
I'm a mechanical engineer with many decades of experience with control systems. I found the programming to be cumbersome, absolutely non-intuitive, and complex. I was able to do it, however. Problem is, unless you are going to fiddle with programming quite often, you won't remember how to do it and you'll have to use the manual every time. Kind of defeats the purpose - I want to "set it and forget it" and only adjust things once in awhile. If you are looking for this kind of functionality, save your money. I would not recommend this product for most people. Simple mechanical or electronic timers on individual lights are much easier, and less expensive.I also found that the lights I programmed worked fine for a few days, then started coming on and off at odd times, without anyone making any programming changes. Sometimes it didn't work at all. There's just me and my wife, no kids to play with it, and my wife has left it alone. And this unit is way too complicated for my smart cats to figure out.

just an "ok" replacement for x-10 system

by Mark T. Twain from Fanwood, NJ United States on 2008-10-13
isn't exactly 100% reliable so don't get your hopes up. i found it to be on par with the x-10 system as far as reliability. i was planning on upgrading my x-10 system to zwave, but haven't been completely impressed yet.

Works inconsistently

by J. Vitagliano from Southeast USA on 2009-06-06
The "ON" function does not work consistently when operating the control inside the house to an outside module. Would not recommend this item for purchase if you plan to operate the control in this manner.

A great remote. System has some learning curve.

by L. Lim from SF Bay Area on 2009-06-03
I have a small network at home and uses 3 of these remotes. Some things are not quite obvious for someone coming from an X-10 background, hopefully this review will help those people. In an X-10 network, each device has an ID, and remotes broadcast command to that ID. Any remote that's configured to (for example) send OFF to device A-3 will turn off that device. And configuration is usually done by setting a physical switch on the remote. On a Z-Wave network, however, you need to tell the remote which button controls which device. If you're not careful, this can lead to button 1 of remote A controlling your kitchen light, but button 2 of remote B controlling the same device. This can lead to frustration and confusion if the remotes are swapped. It also means that for every remote, you need to add the devices you want to control to each button. You can do things not possible with the X-10, however. For example, you can have button 1 control your kitchen light, button 2 your family room light, and button 3 control both.Another nice feature is that you have feedback. If you try to turn on a module that is not plugged in, the LED will flash to indicate an error.I'm still expanding my Z-Wave network at home. The only thing that's slowing me down is the comparatively high price compared to X-10, and the lack of home brewed alternatives.

Not bad...

by Jay from Neenah, WI on 2009-02-25
At $13 I had to at least give it a shot. At $13 I'm not disappointed. You could probably get me to pay $25 if it came down to it.Other reviews complained about the instructions, but for a z-wave device they weren't that bad compared to other z-wave items. I've seen worse. The more you play with z-wave in general the easier it gets.I dropped my review to 4 stars simply since the remote is a little bulky and not as small as I think they may have been able to make it. It also lags a little bit on sending commands. It takes about a second to activate the commands to the switches unlike my Harmony 890 which sends its commands instantly. We bought two to use in our vehicles as we leave and return to control our yard light, porch light & foyer lights. They serve their purpose well.

Awesome Remote / Horrible Instructions

by Ryan Hanan from Oakland, CA USA on 2008-09-28
I added this to my already growing Z-WAVE network. It really works great as do all of the other Z-WAVE products I have purchased with the INTERMATIC logo on them. This remote has a green and red LED which alerts you to its sending status of a "command" and additionally the "acknowledgement" alert that the command was received and carried out. I especially like this ridiculiously basic feature. The Intermatic HA07C Master Controller lacks any LED's, which I think is just dumb when you consider the 6 button remote HA09C has them, and the HA07C Master Controller lacks any backlighting at all which makes using it in low light conditions difficult to impossible to see the command being sent or acknowledged. That is why this controller is so great. The only drawback to the Handheld HA09C is its inability to control more than 6 scenes or groups of controllers. I currently have 7 scene/groups and I have to run over to the Master Controller (which controls 12 scenes/groups) to turn off # 7. Couldn't they just make a handheld controller that would work the same amount as the Master controller?? That seems like smart seemless intigration to me. Also the instructions for pairing this unit to the master are horrible. There are several situations where the instructions are lacking details and I had to call their customer service to get the real instructions. They explained that they are aware of the horrible instructions and are in the process of getting their engineering department to revise them. Over all the unit is a 5+ stars after you get it programmed. The instructions get a 0 star!

A Very Nice Remote

by M. A. Ramos from Florida USA on 2008-03-18
I recently acquired two of these to work with my system, which includes two master controllers as well. These work wonderfully. I programmed them by just having the master remote transmit its settings to it and they learned the functions in that manner. It was very convenient and easily fits in your pocket. This remote and system is RF based, Z-Wave technology. The remote has six channels and can control up to sixteen devices. Your system can only have one primary controller and it seems all the secondary controllers you want. I am very happy with this handy remote.

decent low-cost timer

by Thomas Metro from Newton, MA USA on 2010-01-17
This is a decent low-cost timer for controlling Z-Wave devices. A good way to get sarted with Z-Wave automation.Programming is a bit cumbersome, but not atypical for this kind of device. The first challenge is finding the programming button panel, which is well hidden under the front cover. (The instructions don't seem to illustrate how the cover opens.)At times I've experienced unreliable operation (missed turn ons) when I used the sunset/sunrise feature. Setting a specific on/off time seems to work consistently. It wasn't well explained in the instructions, but in addition to specifying a zone as a starting point for the sunset/sunrise time, you can set them to a custom value, and it will then adjust your time going forward. Unfortunately it does not support the concept of switching devices at an offset to the sunset/sunrise time. (For example, you might want an interior light to come on at 30 minutes before sunset, as it gets darker inside first, while an exterior light you might not need on until 30 minutes after sunset.)Not a show stopper, but it is worth noting that this device has obsolete daylight savings time transition dates, and the manufacturer is still producing units with the obsolete firmware (which isn't upgradeable). So you'll have to disable DST and reset the time manually twice a year.Support from the manufacturer has been acceptable. They respond to email inquires within a few days.I recently damaged the display on my unit, and not surprisingly Intermatic says that replacement parts aren't available. I'm considering trying the similar "Sylvania Z-Wave Remote Control with LCD" rather than buying a replacement HA07C.

Works Well

by Bill from Sacramento, CA on 2009-09-16
The HA07C does what I wanted. The only negative is that it does not have an internal light to see the display in dim light. I have to turn a light on manually to see the display.

It a good product

by T. Cheung from Milpitas, CA on 2009-09-12
The only problem is that the display is not iluminated. The feedback that the switch worked is very small to read sometimes. The price was good, so the product is a good value.

Awesome Remote / No Backlighting or LED's / Horrible Instructions!!

by Ryan Hanan from Oakland, CA USA on 2008-09-28
The HA07C is the heart of your Z-WAVE network. It controls the lighting and appliance "controllers" with individual timer like settings with many options for on and off controls. The unit is easy to pair with an individual controller but pairing it to the hand held remote HA09C was a challenge, however the correct procedure was very easy after I called tech support. Additionally the instructions explain how to set an "on time" for the controllers but do not tell you how to set an "off time" for them in detail. I am tech savy and had problems. Another huge drawback, in my opinion, is that there are no confirmation LED's on this unit like the handheld HA09C has and no backlighting on the display so when the controller sends a command you can not tell if it was sent and received by the controllers unless you have good lighting to see the screen. Why you would put bright LED's on the handheld to show when a command is sent and received and not on the master or a backlight display for that matter is a mystery to me. The problem arises that if you want timer functions for your Z-WAVE products this is the only timer that Intermatic offers. This really sucks at night when its near to impossible to see the display in a dimly lit room. That is why the HA09C Handheld remote is the perfect compliment to the entire system. Intermatics Z-Wave products work flawlessly after being set up. Its the set up which may drive you mad. I highly recommend the entire Z-WAVE line for reliablity and convenience.

Does not come with a controller

by Daniel Fishman from Beverly, MA United States on 2010-08-19
If you're not an expert in Zwave technology, you may think you're buying a remote control AND an outlet, like hundreds of others on the market. Not so... This one has no controller with it, you have to buy one separately for around $50. If you already have the appropriate remote carry on -- but if you were planning to hook this up to a ZWave remote that learns from other remotes, as I was, you're screwed. There is no remote. To be fair, in the fine print, it does not say that a remote is included, but to me, that would be like selling a car without a spare tire -- people's expectations are set by the existing market.

Good outdoor zwave plug

by MJM from New Orleans, LA on 2010-06-05
This is a good device at a good price the only downside is does not store scene info in the device

lousy range

by Soap Opera from Miami, USA on 2009-09-18
I have not been able to get the zwave signal to travel 30 feet from an outside zwave outlet to this outlet, the range on this product is terrible.

Works fine

by John MacDougall from West Coast on 2009-09-12
This is the second identical outdoor module I have bought. Both seem to work fine. I had the first one out in the rain, snow and ice controlling Christmas lights last winter and it worked without problem. They both seems a little tempermental during programming, but so have all the other z-wave modules I have bought. This one is a bargain.

It Works

by -TMcN- from Snohomish, WA United States on 2009-09-07
This does exactly what it claims to, and does it reliably. Sensitivity (to RF Z-Wave signals) is good, adding it to the network was trivial, the power connector fits under the outdoor plug-cover well, it has a button for local control and a status LED. I've been using it for several months and it has worked perfectly. There's really not much more you could want from it.
