Located in the heart of Brighton, UK, disco Revenge is one of the premier gay sites the south coast. With an ongoing project to overhaul the club, Showtec was approached to design a system new lighting for Box Bar on the 2nd floor. The system had to be something that would make the site stand out from their competitors by offering something never before seen in the area.

The first thing that happened was getting rid of existing dj box from the corner of the room and move the center of the back wall. This way we could create strong focal point emphasized on the DJ or performer. From this then designed a roof LED wall that would rise behind the DJ and across the ceiling above the dancefloor, covering a total of 36 square meters. This then would be welcomed by a number of LED battons mounted side walls, designed to surround customers with moving light.

The first job was to move the dj box to the new position. Our team of engineers and electricians removed the existing fuse board dj box, along with all cables need to re-sound system. They were defeated then under the floor to the new position it so the old box could be dismantled. The box was built new dj from scratch and built a laser cut logo in front of the box back lit by two LED battons. In building the new box dj larger than the existing unit, allow space to house the new lighting control system and swap driver required for LED systems.

This gave us a higher resolution than the standard distance of 200 mm that we used before, which allows high quality reproduction and visual graphics.

For the LEDs was decided to use the iColour Flex SLX Color Kinetics Philips range. These units offer high brightness at a reasonable cost with several options and lens spacing. Using clear lenses could produce a more 'industrial' feel to the overall effect. In total, 36 channels of 50 LEDs were used in the 9m x 4m area, which gives us 1,800 individually controlled LEDs. These pilots were ejected with 5 Color Kinetics 480ca driver -sPDS boxes mounted on a rack in the new DJ box.

To add the effect of the roof, a series of LED battons 1200mm long were fitted to the side wall to take the effect of lighting on the walls. In building out the walls, we do battons sit flush with the wall, creating a finish smooth with no protruding edges. 10 battons were fitted to each side wall, each of which contained 18 separate LED segments, each with RGB control.

For the control system, we decided to use a computer-based system running Ecue Lighting Application Suite. This gave a solution perfect the large number of DMX channels required. The roof along with the exsiting battons and Martin MX-4 scanners at headquarters DMX used approximately 6,500 addresses. Using the new software version 5 Ecue, we have been able to connect directly to the controller boxes Philips uses the protocol Kinet. This allowed us to reduce the number of DMX output devices needed, keeping costs to a minimum. The team Ecue run was equipped with two network cards, one to run the network for the drivers Kinet ceiling, and the other to run the network for devices ArtNet DMX output to run battons and the MX-4. Butler Ecue two Silvers were used for DMX output, each running two universes. A total of 16 DMX universes were created to handle all necessary channels.

Once all the equipment was fitted, the floor was sanded and varnished and new ladder flanges were fitted around the club to finish the installation and give the room a finishing touch.
