A dual-ear version of the Plantronics headset-amplifier combination, the H61-M12 provides good audio quality and fine volume controls for hands-free operation of an office phone. Like the H51-M12 monaural model, the H61-M12 takes a bit of setting up. Unlike when using other headsets, a typical multiline phone doesn't default to the headset when you press a line button. With the H51-M12, you have to remove the handset from the cradle in order to use the headset. Pressing a line button activates the speakerphone. However, what's lost in simplicity is gained in finer control over both incoming and outgoing audio levels. The volume control on the front of the amplifier controls the incoming volume--that is, what you hear in your ear. On the side of the unit is a slide that controls outgoing volume--what others hear on the line. Notably, to move this volume slide you'll need to use a plastic "screwdriver" located on the bottom of the unit. Because the H61-M12 fits over both ears, you'll be able to block out sounds in the background of your office. If you prefer the ability to hear a little more of what's going on around you, you'll probably want to go with the H51-M12 single-ear model instead. For situations where the cabinet walls are already acoustically dead, composite barriers may not be necessary-- in this case, the pure foam material can offer a lower-cost alternative with minimal difference in performance. The foam will help absorb unwanted sound from within the cabinet without disrupting airflow between the driver and port. This can reduce unwanted sound reflections and prevent them from exiting through the cone or port.
