Soundproofing Information: Find a contractor Soundproofing

So you have a noise problem and do not know where to turn. You can search the guidance of a contractor, but where are you going to find a contractor who specializes in soundproofing? The fact of the matter is that you will not find soundproofing contractor in the phonebook. In my opinion, really, honestly do not feel that there are contractors out there with enough experience or know how call themselves a soundproofing or contractor control of the nose. Contractors can be a great arrogance and many think they know everything and are unwilling to learn anything new. I'm not saying that all contractors are thus only 99% or less. Just kidding, but many contractors seem to forget who is paying for this work. If you hire a contractor for the first time, be sure to find one that listens to what you are saying. If the project includes sound insulation and have investigated the methods and materials to complete the job and how you explain this to your contractor, you hear these words, shapes and materials for insulation and as you explain this to your contractor you hear these words: "No, no, I know a better way"! If you hear these words from your contractor, please ask yourself a favor and show him the right of the door! I guarantee that no matter what your contractor is, he does not know a better way. Yes I am including Bob Vila, but he does not listen to their customers.
Now if you are able to locate a contractor who is open minded and willing to hear the ideas he has so carefully researched, then you is half the battle won. Contractors seem to have forgotten that the customer is always right. Period! I learned this long ago and there are even times when it is necessary for me to give my clients a little guidance, I never talk to my clients to make them feel they are inferior because they have no knowledge of soundproofing. If a customer insists that a particular product is not right for your application, you kindly tell them that is not appropriate material for the job, but if they insist on request that the wrong material, box me up and send it to them immediately. The customer is always right no matter what.
I think my point here is that people know that any contractor, builder or developer should never be intimidating. You are the customer and you are paying for this service, the contractor has to listen and learn. That will be very difficult for many contractors, but most contractors are truly customer focused and do everything possible to meet the needs of its customers and customers.
I'm sure you will get a lot of comments from the contractors about this article, but if it empowers customers, I'll take the Flack. That's my point of view, what is yours? This is Dr. Bob ... Out!

works as advertized

Reduced the noise cause by my servers, easy to stick onto stuff and really light.

Hey, they work and the price is right.

by DanTheMan from CA, USA on 2010-08-15
It took me one and a half of these kits plus some home made bass traps to tame the living room HT/home recording studio. The result is really worth it at this point. My only complaint is the glue provided wasn't enough for me to glue all the squares in the kit. So either I went heavy, or they went light. It's the best deal I could find.

I Bought this and the DAP seal and peal just like the first guy said. This stuff is awsome, it looks really nice and is so easy to put up. With the DAP seal and peal i can take it off whenever i want without the walls getting messed up so this is the best product i could buy. This is a great deal and have bought 2 boxes because i just can not pass this up.

Looks great, and the price is hard to believe.

by Ryan Barnhart from Cincinnati, OH USA on 2010-05-27
I was previously looking at similar acoustic panels that were $4-5 each, so to stumble on 32 of these for $59 was shocking. I've got 25 mounted over the listening area of my home theater and it looks and sounds so nice. I'm pondering getting a few more cases...Here's a tip - if you want only a semi-permanent installation discard the included Tubetack caulk and get some DAP Seal 'n Peel. [...] Holds these up just fine, and will peel away without damaging the paint or drywall should I chose to remove them.

great

Stop fighting engine rumble, speaker rattle, road noise and buzzing vehicle parts! Apply Dynamat Xtreme to your vehicles resonant surfaces and enjoy improved clarity, loudness and bass response from your car stereo. High-performance Dynamat Xtreme is lighter than Dynamat Original, four times more effective, requires no heat to apply and is recommended for vehicle tops, sides and contoured areas. Dynamat Xtreme is coated with aluminum for high temperature areas such as firewalls and floors. Why does your car stereo sound louder when you pull off the freeway and come to a stop? Road noise steals much of the listenable portion of your music. At 70 mph, a typical automotive noise level of 85 dB leaves you with only 20 dB of listenable music. Applying Dynamat creates a "sonic barrier" restoring 3, 6, even 12 dB of lost dynamic range. Gaining just 3 dB doubles your effective amplifier power. And that means you hear more music. Kit contains four 12" x 36" (305mm x 914mm) pieces of Dynamat Xtreme and includes enough material for two standard size doors.

Does make a difference

by W. G. Smith from on 2010-08-02
I bought this product to do all 4 doors of my 2004 Double Cab Tundra. It took 2 boxes to do all 4 doors just as advertised. At the same time I installed new Polk Audio DB series speakers in the doors. Wow!! What a difference from the factory JBL speakers. I can crank it up and not hear any metal vibration in the door panels. I can also notice a difference in less road noise, especially at 45 mph and up. Another benefit seems to be that the truck interior stays cooler with the AC on. I bought 1 box from Amazon and 1 box from another vendor, Amazon's price was 1/2 of what others charge.

Used on 95 maxima on doors and made a great difference. Used on rear deck and was amazed! Put new JBL GTO 638's in place of Bose system that came in car. The dynamat kit really helped out. I recommend for any part of your car.

Sound Improvement / Reduction

by Remember 9-11 from IL, USA on 2010-03-19
I bought this to improve the cab sound in my Dakota Quad Cab when I was installing new speakers (my wife blew out the old ones!!). It was very easy to work with and install. All I needed was a utility knife to cut the mat to the sizes I needed for the install. It will stay on after it is in place but it is forgiving on install. This means you can make adjustments with the piece you are working with before you roller it down. Using the roller tool (sold separately)was worth the price of admission. It definitely made install easier and was able to clear any air pockets as well as give excellent adhesion.RESULTS: After the install there was a quick difference that could be heard. First thing you noticed is that when the doors are closed they sound more like a luxury car door closing. No more hollow sound, they sounded more solid. The sound in the cab is reduced and this is noticeable when no radio is on. Road noise has been reduced and it is a much nicer environment. As for the music...much nicer listening and clearer due to no competing noises from the road. Everyone who enters the vehicle likes it and knows there is a difference.NOTES: I installed this on the inner door and the outer door. Some sites and installers will tell you this is unnecessary but if you are in the door why not. The thin sheet metal is all that is between you and the road. This pack covered two doors in the front. I bought two boxes to cover all four doors. It took one afternoon to install and it was complete. This is not a hard project at all. If you can get the door panels on and off you can install this product.PRICE: I checked all over the internet and found that Amazon had the best price for this. From my experience this is likely to continue. Free shipping just solidified the deal. Check what you might need and compare the 4 sheet and 9 sheet boxes. Most of the time 2 4 sheet boxes will be cheaper per square inch and get the job done. Check prices and decide before you purchase.OVERALL: I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to anyone. It does what it is advertised to and is very easy to install. It will not make much difference if your vehicle has a lot of soundproofing already but if your car does not then this will do wonders. My truck had some very small pieces of factory mat in the outer door metal already. They were just covered by the Dynamat. You may find the same thing during your install. They must think the truck needed some. I just took it up a notch.

Just Buy the Bulk Rolls & Q-Pads or Dynamat 20410 Pads 12x12

by 0cean from Palm Beach, FL United States on 2010-01-22
This stuff is much thicker and does a better job.Dynamat 20410 Xtreme Shop 4 SqBut I went with another company Amazon # B000P70UP8 You get 6 SQ. FT vs. the 4 SQ FT on the Dynamat.Personally I like the quality of the Q-Pads much better. Fibreglass Evercoat 116 Q-Pads Sound Deadener 12 x 12 (6 Per Pack)I installed them on the outdoor door skin (On the inside of course) and I went three layers. I sprayed the 3M(tm) Underseal(tm) Rubberized Undercoating, 08883 on the bottom areas I could not reach. This is the best rubberized undercoating, it dries fast & great. It will not rubb-off or make a mess like cheap undercoatings. We tested this stuff with gasoline on a piece of scrap, we undercoated a piece of metal then the next day we poured gas on it and let it dry on the undercoating, We then tried to wipe-off the undercoating with a towel. Nothing, It did not hurt the coating at all.All the cheap undercoatings we bought and tested from Walmart, Pep-Boys etc. all failed and the stuff melted and was like tar from a roof. I'm glad I never put any cheap stuff on my cars.I also undercoated the underside of the Van with the 3M(tm) Underseal, maybe 16 cans total. In some areas like under the drivers and pass seats on the underside of the van I installed the Q-Pads right to the painted sheet metal. So both sides of the floor are done the best I could do it. After I used the Q-Pads I sprayed the 3M(tm) Underseal(tm) on top of the Q-Pads to give it a waterproof coating and it all looks black on the underside. If you have some good workers and you buy plenty of material you can really improve the soundproofing. I gave the manager at my local Oil Change Shop 3 cases of Beer for his guys to install the materials for me. I pulled up to the Pit (Hole in the Ground to work) and the Gents did a first class Job. Two of my guys were there also. The Pit type of shop is great because you can get to every angle of the underside using a 4-6 ft. step ladder. We did the wheel wells also, that helped so much. Now the ride is very quiet. The Undercoating on the underside was done after the Q-Pads and Dynamat was installed so we could truly hear the difference. Paper-Mask-Off all your Labels on the Frame, Shocks, etc to avoid any overspray.I have a Turbo Diesel 7.3L Ford Conversion Van with a Magnaflow 4" Stainless Exhaust and I wrapped the entire Exhaust including the Down Pipe, Turbo, Muffler, all the pipe and TailPipe. This is the stuff they use to wrap the Headers at NASCAR. It's called Thermo-Tec 2" Heat Tape, Amazon # ASIN: B00029KC02 # Item model number: 11002 .This was the best mod I did to cut the interior noise level down. This Heat Tape did the job. 2 Boxes did the whole job and 2 boxes of the stainless steel clamps by the same company. All together I spent about 600.00 for everything, but it is well worth it. I also installed the Q-Pads under the front hood, then the Dynamat Hood Liner. Don't forget your firewall on the cars/vans interior. The Firewall is important.I hope my tips may help a few of you. Don't think one layer of Dynamat is going to make a big deal. When people ride in my van it's like a mobile Living Room, quiet and comfortable.Best of Fun to You All.

Good idea, poorly excecuted.

by Joe from Boston, MA on 2010-07-24
I bought the Temp Tabs to use in my apartment. The idea of a temporary mounting solution was very appealing to me. I didn't want to leave the foam behind in the event of a move. The first issue is that the kit came with no instructions. There's a diagram which shows you where to place the tabs on the foam panel, where to place the "velcoins" and how to mount it to the wall. The diagram is pretty good but here's where the product falls short:You will need a caulking gun in order to use the TubeTak adhesive. This will cost about $5 at your local hardware store. You will need a nail (preferably finishing) of at least 4" in length. Once you cut the adhesive tub opening (you should use an angled cut rather than a straight across), you will need to use the nail to puncture the cylinder to get the adhesive flowing. The local hardware store wouldn't sell me a single nail so I ended up using a jewelers screwdriver. There are no instructions on the adhesive that specify how long to let it dry. I tried mounting the first panel too soon and the adhesive wasn't hardened yet. Fortunately I could remove the tab and apply more at that point. In the end I let the adhesive dry for about 2 hours which seemed to work well. The velcoins: The adhesive backing on the coins adheres very well. Unfortunately, the velcro is not strong at all.The big problem with this product is the velcro. Assuming you do everything correctly the velcro is not going to hold a heavy foam panel the way that it's designed.

Description

The Sonic Barrier 1" acoustic damping foam is a precisely engineered material that offers optimum absorption for its thickness. The material features our exclusive embossed surface finish that helps to trap acoustic energy and improve high frequency performance. This finish is applied to an acoustic-grade open-cell polyether foam, which absorbs and converts the acoustic energy into low-level heat. A very aggressive pressure sensitive adhesive provides easy and permanent installation onto any surface. The Sonic Barrier 1" foam is excellent for general loudspeaker cabinet use. The non-composite nature of this material means that it acts as a sound absorbent across a wide range of frequencies. For situations where the cabinet walls are already acoustically dead, composite barriers may not be necessary-- in this case, the pure foam material can offer a lower-cost alternative with minimal difference in performance. The foam will help absorb unwanted sound from within the cabinet without disrupting airflow between the driver and port. This can reduce unwanted sound reflections and prevent them from exiting through the cone or port. The foam can cause an increase in apparent volume, which can help to offset the space taken up by the driver or the port. Sold in 18" x 24" Sheets

  • Features our exclusive embossed surface finish
  • Helps to trap acoustic energy and improve high frequency performance

It does a good job absorbing the sound in my studio. In order to control your room sound, you need more or less 60% area coverage in combination and specially with bass traps. Of course it all depends how much absorbtion you want/need and what frequencies need controling.

Does exactly what it's supposed to do and does it well!

by M. Yatabe from Portland, OR USA on 2010-08-23
This was my first experience with the "Xtreme" version of the Dynamat product, and I'm very happy with the end result. I'd used the original Dynamat when it first came out and, even though it worked really well at sound deadening, it had a funky smell like asphalt roofing tiles. The newer stuff is more rubberized, apparently, and doesn't make my truck smell like a highway surfacing project. The metal backing also made application neater because it helped to conform the material around bumps and corners without tearing.I didn't use a heat gun or a hair dryer, I just left my cut sheets out in direct sunlight for a few minutes before removing the backing and applying. I've also seen people who use a combination of a space heater and their garage floor for the part of the process where you make the Dynamat warm enough to be pliable.Good idea to be really careful when applying the metal lined sound deadening material though, or possibly wear some light gloves, because the edges of your cuts can be sharp.

Dynamat Is A Must

by from on 2010-07-25
If your into car audio/video, then you must get Dynamat. After I did my PT's doors, they sounded different when opening and closing. Dynamat cuts out outside noise I would say about less then half. If anyone owns a PT Cruiser and it rains, inside the PT sounds like a tin can when it rains. Not with Dynamat.

Dynamat

by Leon Lovelace from Jacksonville, North Carolina on 2010-03-30
I installed it on the inside of the trunk of my 97 civic 4 dr because that is the source of my rattling. It worked great, there is no rattling from my trunk lid. Maybe its my car, because it seems to be working so good that it is transfering the rattling to the plastic rear dash. The dynamat also seemed to do the same before because without dynamat, most of the rattling seemed to come from the rear dash. Then I installed dynamat on the rear dash and then I heard it come from the trunk lid. I'm thinking about replacing it with different material so it doesn't rattle anymore

Fantastic Product!

by William R. Lynch from Millstone Township, NJ on 2010-03-03
I have used Dynamat to combat noise in automobiles, dishwashers and even under a stainless steel kitchen sink. The dishwasher and the sink were the most dramatic demonstrations of the value of this product. The dishwasher was on the noisy side, until I had to replace a small switch in the door. While I had it all apart, I decided to coat the inside of the door panel with Dynamat. Now the dishwasher makes a soft hum as it running. The sink was insulated, but it made that cheap rain on a metal roof sound when you turned on the water. It was difficult to have a conversation and do the dishes at the same time. Now it is dead quiet! What a change! I love this stuff. I know that I will be on the look out for more Dynamat applications in my life!

Warning! Don't buy sound deadener products from Canada!

by rxonmymind from on 2010-09-07
Hello all from sunny CA. New to this forum, but not new to Car Audio. Just a warning to those who are contemplating purchasing products from a Canadian sound deadening company & their policy for returns. BQuiet & listen. First off I'll say that this was 100% MY fault in that I did NOT think it through all the way. I ordered two rolls of asphalt based sound deadener at about $160. Not thinking how much it would smell I opted to return these two rolls. The cost? $96! Even if you flat out refused the items they will charge you $76 shipping PLUS whatever customs deem appropriate. Even their exchange policy is a mute point when charging this for returns. So with apologies in advance to S/S & Sound deadener show down, Dynamat and ALL sound deadening companies based in U.S.A., keep in mind the cost on the back end of such a "DEAL". Yes you'll pay more for Dynamat but do it right the 1st time. I'm now stuck with two rolls that I can't use. Many time we search the internet for such "deals" w/o taking into account how much it would be to return a product if you don't like it. Such as Canada. SO save yourself time & money and buy anything listed here as you can't go wrong. BUY IN USA!!

For my Cousin

Trunk application quieted down road noise alot,

by Yugioh from on 2010-08-30
Used this on my honda fit and Dynamated the spare tire wheel well. removed the tire well covers and sheeted the tire well. A dramatic improvement in road noise. Estimate a 3dB redcution at 30 mph. I Plan on putting some more Dynamat on the spare tire well cover in the front wheels. That should yeild a more few db loss of road noise. Now long road trips will be far more pleasant.

Resonant Evil

by M. Ram from San Jose, CA, USA on 2010-08-07
My 2004 Honda Civic had some rattles, but mainly suffered due to the thin metals in the trunk and door areas. Despite installing new speakers and a powered sub (an Infinity Basslink), my music really sounded muffled, with a metallic tinge and a lack of mids (especially in songs with vocals). Driving on the freeway always meant turning the volume up, which made the music louder but didn't help in terms of quality. I tried stuffing the area behind the rear wheel wells (on the sides of the trunk) with foam, but that didn't help much.I bought two of these bulk packs back in January but didn't have the time to put them in until late July. I didn't use a heat gun, but did set the sheets outside in the sun for a bit before using them (which did help make the adhesive stickier). I used some odd things (scissors, a chisel to push down on hard to reach areas, the rounded handle of a screwdriver) as well as an old wooden roller, which is basically a necessity if you want the Dynamat to go on evenly and look smooth.I planned to Dynamat the trunk, rear deck, all four doors and under the rear seat area. Taking out all of the lining, popping out the door panels, etc. took a while, but as I had done it before it wasn't difficult. I eventually also Dynamatted parts of the center console and even under the steering column and glove box. It's recommended to use denatured alcohol to wipe down the metals beforehand, but I just used rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth. Application is pretty straightforward, but unlike most people, I didn't totally cover the surface of every area, just the majority of it. In other words, the trunk is mostly covered but the rear deck and doors just have patches of Dynamat in certain areas. After scouring many forums, I learned that Dynamat is mainly for vibration dampening and a little goes a long way, so I cut a lot of strips and squares for the doors. Also, certain parts of the car had a secondary metal that was much thicker and didn't really need matting. Conversely, a lot of the plastic trim is thin, so I used Dynamat on their insides (including the insides of those door panels). I ended up using around a box and a half of Dynamat in the end, and plan on using the rest on the ceiling (and/or under the front seats) in the future.I was skeptical in the beginning, but wow, it really did make a difference in terms of sound! You've probably read that your trunk, doors, etc will now sound heavier and denser, and that's true. The real treat is how much better my music sounds. I can actually hear the vocals loud and clear now, and the sub hits a lot harder. I actually had to fine tune my equalizer and reduce the gain on the sub a bit to even things out, but it's definitely an acoustic improvement. I was thinking about buying an amp or two but now I don't need to!The only negative I found was that sometimes when peeling the paper backing off, it will tear and you'll have to dig into the adhesive to get at what's left behind.Another thing to note is that the Dynamat adds weight to your car. I'm not sure how much it is, maybe 50-60lbs for two packs like this...which doesn't sound like a lot but is noticeable once you get back on the road.

No bad for a cheap purchase

Where I went wrong was not buying the bulk to save money, be sure to have a wooden roller and a heat gun. I did my application on a really warm day and the mat was flexible and sticky but still need to be rolled into contour areas. I bought the bulk package to line the 4 doors of my 2001 Chevy Blazer since i was in the mood to fix it up. The product works as stated, easy to apply and reduced the door vibration as well. Road noise was reduced as well, I will be installing some under the floor mats to quiet down more road noise.
