What is the best free or VERY cheap material for sound proofing a room for band practice?

We are in desperate need to sound proof our house to thwart sound from escaping. We received a noise violation the other day, and almost got kicked out of our house. What is a good material or product to sound proof BESIDES that really expensive SH%T that cost hundreds of dollars. We were thinking bed mattresses.

Egg-boxes, lots of egg-boxes. Seriously. Maybe a local supermarket could hook you up. You may want to put like fabric or cushioning or something inside em for better proofing.

How can I sound proof a room?

I have a very loud air compressor and I want to build a sound proof room around it. What materials should I use inside or covering the walls?

A good way to sound proof a room is to get DY NO MAT -its a weird foil insulator you put in between the drywall...It works awesome!

If your on a tight budget my suggestion would be to hang some thick tapestries on the walls to try and muffle the sound.
