A video tape degrades over time because it makes the magnetic media. What you see ten, twenty years later, is not as sharp as when the tapes were created. So what is the lifespan of a tape (which includes Betamax, VHS, 8mm and mini-DV)?

If you ask a professional or a photographic studio in question, the answer you get may vary anywhere between 5 to 10 years. This is because much depends on how 1) you handle it, 2) how to store and 3) the frequency with which they played and rewound it - rather than let it sit for years and years. Here are some tips to prolong the life his films:

How to manage your Video Tapes

 • Do not touch the tape itself. Wait by the side of the tape

 • Rewind the tape before storing.

 • Keep away from curious children, avoid falls or blows of the tapes.

 • Keep cassettes away from magnetic fields

 • Do not leave a cassette in the car where it is exposed to heat and cold

 • If using tape again and still cold, let it warm to room temperature first.

 • Sometimes fast forward and rewind a tape being stored for long.

Where to store video tapes

The conditions under which the tape is stored and used can extend their shelf life. Watch these video storage tips:

 • Store in a stable, cool and dry.

 • Stay away from hot, humid and dusty.

 • Store tapes in the cassette case.

 • Store tapes vertically and not flat (see photo) to distribute the pull of gravity equal and stable.

But why wait in the first place? The best quality of transfer you can get is YESTERDAY. The longer you wait, the more chances they are taking on the tape degrading magnetic media not to mention video transfer costs do not decrease, only increase.

How can I change a Sharp projector monochrome color?

You can not. You'd have to buy a new projector. The difference between a black and white projector and color technology. Most projectors have a color color wheel and electronics to create the color of a monochrome display. Some have cathode ray tubes of color. Others have 3 different color images create the color. Sorry.
