Mini Home Theater Receiver

600 watts versus 1000 watts speakers?

I'm getting surround sound speakers. and im looking at two right now and I'm not sure which is better. one of them has 1,000 watts and has a "mini" receiver. the other is 600 watts and has a complete receiver and to the extent I can say its very good. im wonder how much of a difference of 400 watts really is, and where I will to see the difference. 1000W is now just over $ 300. 600 watts is 350 $. what you think is better? the 1000 watt one is the Sony Bravia 5.1 Channel Home Theater System (HTSS360) is Yamaha 600 watt 5.1 Channel Home Theater System (YHT292 b) Now Im gonna use this in my room so often I need to go really far stronger than well ... well now I'm just checking some things out for boxing day. I do not know how things will be looked capable of doing. so does anyone have any idea of the things I look for them to be up on their website or something?

The power values of these measurements are mostly arbitrary and probably a "peak" measurement, or the maximum that can output over a short period of time. They are also a total of all channels (amplified signals of going to the speakers) combined, so if this is a 5.1 system (the sub may or may not have its own amplifier), then you can basically do the math ... 5 speakers of the main channel and 1000 watts (peak) is equal to 200 watts per channel (peak). The same can be done by the other system. Why am I insisting on this term "peak"? Because it is a legitimate value that can effectively stop judging the amplifier. Root mean square or RMS "is the true power of the amplifier can occur and is the only real value of the gain that is worth knowing. In general, you can bet that the RMS value is less than 25% of full and sincere in these home theater in a box, a bet that is closer to 20%. My very high home theater receiver "only" rating of 125 Watts RMS per channel, but has a peak which is close to 3000 watts or ~ 425 watts peak per channel which means that my RMS is only 30% of the peak! And that is a receptor for ~ $ 5000! Now, to the details of your questions ... First, I owned 10 watts per channel 2 channels with decent speaker configurations, which were some of the sound systems spectacular I've heard, so power is not even half the equation when it comes to sound! Now both of these brands have been doing for HTIB systems many years and have extensive experience in the industry, but between the two, Sony is best known for your video components (TVs, DVD players, etc. ..) and the Yamaha is best known for its audio components (everything from speakers for the concert grand piano). Where does this leave you? Take a listen as critically as you can shop with your own selection of audio to the sample, and decide for yourself. While the system of hearings, OJ mistake, do not rise to a good audio! Subwoofers strong are the ultimate form of audio tape of poor quality, such as crosses or resonances in bad speaker cabinets, so turn down the sub volume to no more than 1/3rd total, because even in the store than enough enough to feel his presence. Then there is his last statement ... He's in his bedroom ... That means there are others in the house are not appreciated deafening blows and audio at all hours, so you must search for the best performance with low volume. Look for features as a 'night mode' or similar that can compress the frequency range and make good listening for you and less offensive to others. Hope this helps!

Might last you ONLY for a year if you're lucky!!

Pleasantly Surprised for the Price

by JayRod from WI on 2009-09-14
I installed this unit in my Crownline 266 CCR to replace the failed factory TAPE deck...lol.Easy to install, great sound, solid construction, the included remote wiring easily made it to my swim platform where I installed it for easy access when socializing behind the boat at the sand bar.One feature I was pleasantly surprised to see that isn't really mentioned in the documentation on line or in the manual is that even if you cut power to this unit completely (like disconnecting the battery or using a battery switch,) the unit remembers all your settings and stations. VERY nice feature to have on a boat that is stored during the week and used on the weekends.Over all...very happy with this purchase and recommend it for anyone looking to buy. The price here was as much as I could find it for re-firbed on EBay.PS...BOSS Marin equipment is made by Jenson.

Rocks the boat!

by J. L. DeLong from Saratoga Springs, NY on 2008-06-24
I purchased this stereo from amazon a month ago and could be happier! We installed it on our boat and its awesome! especially having the remote to control the volume without having to get hit in the head by the glove box everytime is a plus! Installation was a bit challenging but well worth it, sounds great! Love it!

Good hardware, buggy software

by LTK from on 2009-08-23
My testing was limited to testing only over-the-air ATSC/8VSB signals. Was not tested for QAM operation.I found this tuner to be extremely sensitive (in a very good way) and handles multi-path very well. The included antenna performs about the same as a simple UHF bow-tie/loop but is easy to carry in a backpack or computer case. The included software however, is the problem. Even after downloading and installing the updated software and drivers from Artec's website, it still crashes my computer (blue-screen) within an hour or so. I've emailed Artec's support but have not yet heard back from them. Please note that the module runs VERY warm (but not hot) to the touch. This is normal. The included adapter for the coax to the module is not attached permanently to the module - it's a friction fit. I'll give myself a month or two to loose it and then figure out where to get a replacement.Summary: Hardware (chipset) is very good, software is deficient.Update 9/16/09: Never heard back from Artec's customer support. That gives them "zero stars" for support in my book.

love everything about this system except

by Iruma from NY, USA on 2010-08-15
except that i have to keep pushing the button until i get to the track i want. If you have 30 tracks on your CD, and you want to play track 30 you have to press the forward button 30 times! (with classical music CDs 30 tracks is not uncommon, by the way) This is a minor problem but still bothers me. I have a JVC mini stereo system "fs y-1"JVC FS-Y1 Component Audio/Video System with DVD/CD Player and AM/FM Tuner which i also love and with that i can go directly go whatever track i want.everything else such as sound quality, size, and functions, i'm all very satisfied.

Excellent reciever

by m san from on 2010-08-14
Boss has out done themselves with this unit!! This unit compared to other models is less expensive and easy to install. It works with practically every ipod, except Generation 1 and 2. But my Ipod touch sounds great while docked inside safely. It was very easy to install and the 80 Watts x 4 makes any speaker sound better than before. I like the transfer feature that allows you to transfer music from a SD card to Your media device. Highly recommended for any boater looking for an exceptional stereo for there Boat.

Unit has a great sound and power for the $$. Difficult to tune the stations as touch controls are very sensitive especially when boat moving around on the water.

Great for keeping your Ipod safe, little hard to figure out controls.

We always use an Ipod when we are on the boat, so this sounded great! Installation was easy, I have two amps and this has pre amp outputs for front, rear and sub woofer so I just had to plug them in. Great sound, doesn't have any different sound features, just bass and treble adjustments along with bass boost if you have a sub woofer, but it sounds great. When you put your Ipod inside, which is pretty easy, it is secure so you don't have to worry about it getting wet or bouncing all over you dash. It also charges when it is docked inside. Won't support the Iphone, but I have had just about every Ipod docked in it and they all worked. The "touch pad" controls are not as sensitive or fast as you would think, sometime you have to touch them a few time to get it to work. The wireless remote is great. My stereo is mounted at an angle (2001 Ski Centurion)and if you are sitting down in the back set you need to hold the remote up high to work, not a big deal. The only real negative thing that I have with the stereo is that if you find a specific song, playlist or whatever it is time consuming and you will need the directions until you have done it a few time. The great thing is though, it has an aux input so you can always plug another Ipod in that way.
