Digital Home Theater Projector

Is there a digital audio cable for the GameCube?

My projector and surround sound system connected through my home theater PC with a programmer Fatal1ty SoundBlaster sound cards. You can accept Optical SPDIF input through an adapter. Is there an optical audio cable for the GameCube? If not, my sound card still give me Logic surround sound Pro across the red / white RCA cables into the 3.5mm input jack on the sound card?

There is no way to get digital sound from the gamecube, only analog. The console has a "digital" connection on the back of a component video connection, but even this is misleading as video analog component.

Noisy fan and horrible light leakage

by G. Kuhn from Woodland Hills, CA United States on 2010-06-05
I couldn't be more disappointed with the Optoma HD65. My Panasonic PT-AE700 LCD projector began a rapid decline after only 3000 hrs (and a $300 bulb replacement) due to it's poor optical block design and the dreaded blue blob that eventually covered the entire screen. After being burned by organic LCD technology I decided to switch to DLP. The reviews on this bargain 720p projector seemed too good to be true, and like all things in life that seem that way, it was too good to be true. Sure, I got it for only $614 from Amazon, but what a waste of money. 1) the fan noise is terrible - unless you'll be using it in a noisy family room, trying to use it in a quiet home theater is truly unbearable 2) the light leakage through the cooling vents is ridiculously bad - I can't believe Optoma's designers even think this is acceptable engineering. Mounting the projector on the ceiling, the entire 2'x4' white ceiling panel in front of the projector is lit up and totally distracting. I even tried putting black over the ceiling panel, hoping to absorb some of the light, and it is still bright enough to be noticeable.I could have probably suffered with one of those 2 problems to save the money (now I'm going to have to spend more than twice that to buy the Epson Homelite 8100, which is what I should have done in the first place), but to try and ignore both those major flaws is not worth the constant frustration. I've never experienced as much buyers' regret as I have after buying and trying the Optoma HD65. I only hope that Amazon will credit me a full refund, but even if they don't, it's not worth keeping this piece of junk.By the way, I will say one positive thing about the HD65, the picture quality and color was quite nice. However, I now understand first hand what they mean about how difficult it is to place a DLP projector. This thing has almost zero placement tolerance when it comes to its location in the home theater. I have a 92" screen, and I found that I had about 6-10" of tolerance when it came to its distance from the screen (the zoom is nearly worthless), and even less tolerance in relation to the top edge of the screen (hanging it from the ceiling mount). I guess I was spoiled by the tremendous flexibility of the Panasonic LCD projector, which had a wide range of zoom and excellent lens shift. After relocating my mount more than a foot closer to the screen than the Panasonic, I then had to do all sorts of mods to adjust the height to be able to work with the Optoma. I finally got it lined up and filling the screen, but the amount of effort and frustration was many times more than it would have been with any LCD projector.Even though I was burned by organic LCD technology from Panasonic, my attempt to switch to DLP was such a failure that I'm going back to what I know looked great, so I'm getting the Epson 8100 for around $1350, but it's 1080p instead of 720p, has a quiet fan, great picture, and lots of placement flexibility and none of the horrible light leakage of the HD65.Save yourself the frustration and avoid this product unless you're just getting it to use in the backyard projected against a sheet or white wall. For your home theater you will not be happy with this projector.

OPTOMA HD65

by Earl Brazeal from WOODSTOCK, CT, US on 2010-05-03
I purchased this projector used, with 20 hours on it and 11 months left on the warranty. But, The HDMI input does not work (use YCrCb/RGB instead) but the price was right. Otherwise, the 1080i HDTV, BD and up-scaled DVD images (77" picture at 10') are very bright, richly colored, and very sharp (with "max" sharpness setting). This model (HD65) is still available on the Web at bargain prices (replaced by the HD66).

Exactly what we needed!

by Joel Forsyth from on 2010-03-18
Great picture, great price. HDMI Port along with component and VGA. Menu is sometimes difficult to work with (you can only make changes if you have a source running into it) and picture adjustments are minimal. Requires a pretty good angle to be viewed perfectly. We have to use a few sheets of paper under the feet to offset the angle of the screen. It's ok, though, it performs perfectly with great quality!

Great picture and runs well

by gyrotechnix from on 2010-07-15
My wife bought this as an anniversary gift. Although it is a no name product, it works very well. The picture looks great. I attached my laptop and used the HDMI port. There are a few issues getting the resolution set. But once I got it set, Avatar looked great at 46 inches. (The screen was only that wide.) All-in-all, I am very happy with the projector.

Highly Recommend!

by DJ from Montana, USA on 2010-05-19
This unit is installed in a theater setup and the bright, crisp, high-definition presentation quality is superb. It is also worth noting that the filter-free design prevents the need (since it is ceiling mounted) to climb up a ladder and maintain the unit as other models require. Overall, everyone including myself is very impressed with this projector.

Pleased

by Peter V. from Denver CO on 2010-04-20
Movie night at the house is now much more exciting. I watched Avatar on bluray and it was stunning!Pro : Picture quality, everyone loves it. 1080 Is incredible.Cons : I will need purchase blackout curtains to effectively watch this during the day. The auto input search changes faster than my cable box can negotiate the resolution and speed of the HDMI connection, I do not have this problem when connecting my PS3 (bluray) to it.I resolved that by turning it off. Also the projector requires the screen to be a good distance away, for my 100 inch screen its a little more than 15 feet. Carful planning of the location of your bluray player and sound system is required. I have a 25ft HDMI cable and that works, but I tried going 50ft and that didnt.I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, if you love watching HD movies at home its a must.

This is a great projector

by Tod Frank from Costa Mesa, CA on 2010-03-21
This is the best projector I've owned so far. It is bright enough to work well in ambient light. It looks great with my AT&T U-verse HD and my Blu-ray disks. I just wish projectors used universal ceiling mounts. I purchased a mount for this projector and adapted it to fit the mount already in my ceiling.

Get a much cleaner looking room without sacrificing any loss of surround sound, both in terms of fidelity and clean and open sound fields that wrap around your viewing as well as any surround speaker systems costing tons more.

I'll be the First to review

by Jarone Consulting Inc. from on 2010-04-16
Okay I'll be the first! With LCD TV prices dropping, I just had to get the Sony 65" Bravia and needed something to make it sound better. It's a lazy way to try and get 7.1-speaker system with out all the mess. Set-up was clean and easy. It has an IntelliBeam microphone that makes setting up the sound adjustment for you very simple. The Wireless set up for subwoofers is a nice feature. It also comes with a wireless setup for your iPod. From 1 to 10 the TV speaker sound was about a 4. With the YSP-5100 I now give it a 7 But if your watching a Blu-Ray movie it jumps to an 8 1/2. The wireless transmitter for the iPod was broken. The box arrived in good shape, but Yamaha did not do such a good job on packing. It was crush and not useable. I called customer service and after only a couple of minutes I got to speak to someone with an attitude. I Fed-Ex the broken parts back to Yamaha and now waiting for the results. I've spent allot of time trying to set it up with my Logitech Harmony 1100. The YSP-5100 comes with 5 HDMI connections, Logitech advises you to plug all your devices into the YSP. I'm clad I have an extended warranty with my Harmony, because I'm still not up and running with the remote, and Logitech customer support is hearing from me often. The YSP-5100 comes with a terrific remote. So I would check it out before spending 300.00 on a universal one. There is a good chance I could be putting my Harmony 1100 on EBay. If I were you I would wait for the price to drop. You'll need a subwoofer and probably the mounting rack ....so tack on another 3 to 400.00.

Was even better than I expected. Awesome picture!

by Tim Durham from Southaven, MS on 2010-02-06
I am just about done remodeling our whole upstairs which includes our 500sf gameroom. I am creating a portion of that to be the "media" area and decided to go with a projector. I got this projector b/c the reviews were very good. To say the least, I am very very happy with this projector. The picture quality is super. The ease of use is very simple. I was a typical male and did not even open the manual... I did not need to. It was very simple and there was nothing to really change. We first tested the Xbox and my son was on cloud nine playing on a screen that was 6 feet wide. I then hooked up the Cable to it using the standard video cable and the picture looked really good. Will be going to get an S-video cable tomorrow. When the playroom is complete I will be doing a ceiling mount there. Due to the projection angle, you can get very close to the screen w/out obstructing it when you do a ceiling mount. Not that you should be that close.I have an old Sherwood video/audio system that handles multiple input/outputs and I will be using that system to manage my audio for the various items (xbox, wii, regular cable TV, and DVD player.I wish the HD71 had a "sleep" function on it so that it would turn off after a certain amount of time. If we have young folks over watching a movie or game late at night, we can set the cable to turn off on a sleep timer but the HD71 will just stay on until it is turned off :(The speaker on the HD71 is just for emergency purposes only as it is not very loud at all. For a business presentation it would be of some value for that. It came with a set of video cables and a set of composite video cables. This unit is 720p and I just can't imagine that 1080p could be that much better, maybe it could. But from my research, you can not find a better unit for the money on this unit. I paid $943 for it w/ free shipping. You will positively be satisfied with the quality of the picture and ease of use. I can't vouch for long term durability and hopefully that will never be an issue. I did purchase an extended 1 yr warranty for aprox $35.

Fantastic Versatility

by A. Wabeke from Havre, MT USA on 2009-08-27
I purchased this projector through [...]. BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE! They call to confirm purchases, they follow up the purchase through email (AWESOME!) even 6 months after the purchase! Anyways, great connections: HDMI, VGA, DVI, RCA, Component. The ONLY problem I have with it: no audio out! HDMI carries Audio and Video, but there is no way to get Audio out. Why would I need Audio in? I don't know, but I found a work around and have enjoyed this projector ever since I purchased it. It's fairly bright in my Living Room if I close the blinds and pull the shades. Worked amazingly well when I had it in my "Man Cave" for gaming/movies. Definitely worth the money!

Pleased so far

by Ken P. Gables from Birmingham on 2009-08-24
This is my first purchase of a projector after about a year of experience using others. I am a photographer who occasionally uses projectors to teach and was desiring a projector which was bright, and capable of maximizing details of images. I also wanted to occasionally use this for projecting movies. I decided to give a DLP projector a try. I am pleased thus far, but have yet to see any digital projector which will reproduce the level of clarity, tone, and color that a traditional slide projector does with photographs. This projector is bright but I still find myself wanting to get the room as dark as possible. It connects to my macbook reliably without any confusing sequence of tasks, and works just like an external monitor. Before my purchase I read another review that commented on the small zoom range that the projector has, and this is certainly true, and has limited the positioning of the projector to between 8 to 12 feet to fill the width of a 72 inch wide projector screen. The projector does not come with a cable, so I had to go get one an ended up with a $50 HDMI, another cost. It does not come with a carrying bag, but I found an old laptop bag which is working well so far. I am pleased with the purchase and would recommend this projector to others.

Very Nice

I have average knowledge when it comes to projectors; at 12.5' it projects a very nice image on an 106" screen. I have a grey, 1.8 gain Optoma Greywolf II screen and I am very pleased with the image. As for the noise created by the fan I have no complaints like other reviews I have read.

Sounds good, but has limited HDMI inputs

by Mike B from Maryland on 2010-09-05
I was debating 4 or 5 stars on the rating its probably 4.5. The setup/manual is a little daunting . Took about 2-3 hours to decipher the remote buttons, the different hookup options and set my specific system up. Came nicely packaged like you would expect for premium Yamaha audio items. The calibration process is neat to watch. Only problems so far are limited HDMI inputs. A DVD and a cable box are bare minimum HDMI connections and thats all the YSP3050 supports. If you have other HDMI inputs you are out of luck. I decided to hook the optical PCM TV outputs into the YSP3050 instead of putting the YSP3050 as central to my system via HDMI switching and having to rewire all the HDMI connections. Although with the PCM optical hookup the readout on the box indicates 2 channels in not sure if/why I can't get 5.1 out of the PCM optical port.Second issue is the vague or non-existant mounting instructions. It would be nice if there were mount plates provided or built in mounting holes. For me an ideal location is above the TV and there is no clear way to do that with no apparent sturdy YSP3050 mounting holes for the 25 lb box.My Harmony remote was able to be programmed to handle all the needed functions so the TV/cable/dvd/appleTV/game console all work with the YSP3050 albeit not thru HDMI. Although Harmony setup lists the device as a audio amplifier not a sound bar.I've re-done the auto setup cal a few times as I move things around, just takes a minute or so. It does seem to setup the level of the external sub woofer also so you don't need to play with your sub outputs by ear. You can always go back to the sub after the cal and adjust the signal up or down to your tastes but when you do the next cal the YSP will flatten out the changes again. One of the other posts said there was no remote control of the sub, however there is a "night time" mode which cuts the sub outputs down. Its in the manual.Last little nit was the built in FM tuner. The sensitivity with the provided antenna plugged into the RF coax connector is pretty low. Almost all the local FM channels sounded slightly noisy. I'd probably basically skip that or try a larger external antenna. It was handy for a quick power up check of the unit, I have not used the built-in FM since.

Easy Surround Sound

by V-Ron from Pittsburgh, PA United States on 2010-04-16
I received a large screen Panasonic HDTV for my birthday, and although I loved the picture, I was not satisfied with the sound coming from the built-in speakers. The TV is in our bedroom, and therefore, I did not want to go with a multi-speaker setup. I decided to look at soundbars. I probably would have gone with the soundbar made by KEF or Definitive Technology, because they make such excellent speakers in general, but the soundbars made by those 2 companies do not come equipped with built-in amplification. Again, I wanted to minimize the number of additional pieces of equipment which had to be added, so I decided to look into Yamaha's sound projector selection, due to the fact that Yamaha has an excellent reputation, has been making sound projectors for longer than most other manufacturers, and does include amplification in the single unit. Yamaha has a wide selection of sound projectors, ranging in price from around $600 to over $2000. I felt that I wanted to spend no more than $1000, which led me to the YSP-3050. At the time, Amazon was offering it as a "bundle" with a free Yamaha subwoofer, and that convinced me to take the plunge. Although the sound from the YSP-3050 is significantly better than the sound from the TV speakers, I do not think it is as good as would be expected from separate speakers and a receiver. Of course, that is also not what Yamaha promised. All things considered, for someone who does not want separates, I would strongly recommend this system. I have 2 cautionary things to mention: First, Yamaha states that this system is simple to set up. However, the manual is close to 100 pages long! It is true that the initial setup is relatively simple, but perfecting the system for your room, and understanding the variations that can be implemented, is not so simple. Second (and I think this is a big one): some of the higher priced Yamaha sound projectors come with a jack that allows you to turn the subwoofer on and off with the remote control from the sound projector. The YSP-3050 does not include that jack, so the subwoofer has to be turned on and off manually. If you plan on getting a Yamaha subwoofer, you might want to consider one of higher priced Yamaha sound projectors which come with this jack.

Excellent sound in a small package

by E. Lee from Cupertino, CA USA on 2010-04-08
The Yamaha YSP-3050 is my first soundbar purchase, and I settled on it after reading lots of reviews (both professional and peer) which praised its sound quality. I was interested in a soundbar because I was averse to setting up a true 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system for various reasons, and Yamaha was consistently rated at the top of the field. I took advantage of Amazon's offer of a free Yamaha YST-FSW050BL Advanced YST II Down-Firing Active Subwoofer with purchase.SOUND: This is the most important factor, in my book. I'm happy to say the reviews I read were accurate, and the sound quality of the device does not disappoint. I was pleasantly surprised at how good of a job the soundbar does at simulating 5.1 sound. My room does not match either of the "ideal" layouts described, and I utilized the automatic calibration function, and the sound is excellent in 5 beam mode and stereo + 3 beam mode. My friend owns a Sony HTC Soundbar, and he commented that the Yamaha seemed to have slightly superior sound. Either way, the audio for my Blu-Rays and video games have never sounded better. I haven't spent as much time testing out "built-in" subwoofers because I have an external one, but from what I can tell the addition of the external subwoofer is a substantial benefit for bass fans. I'm glad I got it.SETUP: Setup was relatively simple, especially for HDMI devices. It should be fairly obvious what connectors go where. However, there are a few potential snags for the unwary. One annoyance was the fact that all the inputs/outputs (except HDMI) on the rear panel are downward facing, so reconfiguring them requires turning the entire soundbar on its side. Another confusing feature was the ability to reassign audio inputs to video inputs. As an example, you can select AUX1 optical as the audio input to associate with your component video input, or you can select an RCA analog input to associate with the same video input. This is an extra level of configuration that is helpful (and by design saves space on the rear panel), but can be confusing to learn. Unfortunately the manual doesn't do an amazing job of explaining this feature either. Generally speaking, the manual is great at covering the basics, but lacking on the advanced features (which I would assume are the ones users would be more likely to refer to the manual for). For those who are having trouble figuring this out, the confusion arises because the remote control selections are labeled by AUDIO input, but the input assignment menu is grouped by VIDEO input. So although it looks like you are assigning AUX1 audio to Component Video, for example, in reality you are assigning Component Video to AUX1 audio. This is because the mode you will select when operating the soundbar is AUX1, and the soundbar will then know to pass through Component Video to the television set. I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense as written, but it's somewhat non-intuitive as I explained. So far, my biggest gripe is actually with a technical limitation. The YSP-3050BL only supports up to 1080i input through component, and not full 1080p as it should. (Though some will mistakenly claim otherwise, component video does indeed support full 1080p, and I've been using 1080p over component on my Xbox 360 for a long time now.) This limitation was not made obvious anywhere, and took an e-mail to Yamaha support to determine why my component video was not being passed through. Thus, I have been faced with the choice of lowering the quality of my video to 1080i or sending the video signal directly to the TV and not taking advantage of the receiver-function of the soundbar. To Yamaha's credit, their support was knowledgeable and quick to respond.PRICE: Let's face it, $1000 is a little steep, especially when major competitors (e.g., Sony HTCs) are in the $300-range. That being said, all accounts point to the Yamaha as offering superior audio. It's probably not $700 worth, and you certainly can find a full 5.1 system for less than $1000. But there are many reasons a full 5.1 or 7.1 setup are not practical, and if you have the extra cash this is guaranteed to deliver a good audio experience.

Equal to Surround Sound

by Rogmd from Long Beach,CA on 2009-02-05
Great product! Very easy to set up even in the manual mode. Especially easy using HDMI cables. I have replaced my eight year old surround sound system and the Sound Projector is actually better than hard wired speakers. I have an unusual shaped room and even though it does not really "fit" the room dimensions for the projector, the result is great.

The Yamaha YSP-3050BL Digital Sound Projector is a compact, easy to use, and easy to setup(using HDMI) Home Theater solution that provides very good sound. Met my expectations and then some. So far (about 30 days use) I think it is one of the best possible solutions for a small home theater system in a limited well defined space. It works ok in the wide open space where I have it currently installed but in a smaller space with walls you will get a better surround experience. The only complaint I have is that I have not been able to program the remote with some of my connected equipment. Going to check out Yamaha customer support.

Description

The new YSP-4000 Digital Sound Projector offers versatile new features such as, 1080p-compatible HDMI, analog video to HDMI digital video up-conversion, and component/composite inputs. Other features include: iPod and XM HD surround compatibility, built-in FM tuner, RS-232C for custom installation and a wide variety of beam settings, including My Surround Beam, for a true multi-channel surround sound experience from a single component. The YSP-4000 applies the Digital Sound Projector technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is true multi-channel surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system ¿ but without the need for extra speakers! As amazing as it seems, the YSP-4000 can actually deliver multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners the same way that sound from front, center and rear speakers does. DVD movies and other digital sources sound just the way they are supposed to. Dolby Pro Logic II is included, so even 2-channel TV's sound can be heard in true multi-channel surround. Its elegant space-saving design avoids the need of numerous speakers and cables. It can be wall mounted or placed on a shelf or rack. The YSP-4000 has a powerful and efficient digital amplifier built in. It powers the 40 beam drivers at 2W each and the two woofers at 20W each, for a total of 120W of power. There is no need for the customer to purchase an additional amplifier or receiver.

Features

  • True Multi-Channel Surround Sound
  • Analog to HDMI Video Upconversion, Scaling to 720p/1080i
  • Built-in FM Tuner and XM Radio Ready

Product not well built.

by Larry T. Gardner from Los Angeles, CA United States on 2010-07-28
I purchased this new sound "Projector" in February, 2010. Sound went completely dead suddenly, and now needs to be sent out for repairs--I could not fix problem using Manual for use. I consider this product both poorly build and unreliable, and I've been buying electronic sound products for 50 years.

best soundbar for the money

by D. Duong from Los Angeles, CA on 2010-07-01
pros: - best simulated surround for the money & space - looks good - price (the price has dropped significantly since its original release making the current price a bargain. - easy setupcons: - additional cost for mounting brackets - no sub-woofer included - 2 hdmi inputs (great for a simple setup but not enough for extensive systems) - complicated remote

Simply the best for the money

by Randy Maddon from BLAINE, WA, US on 2010-06-13
I have been investigating "sound bars" for close to two years. This unit is NOT a sound bar, its a sound projecter and there is a HUGE difference between the two. I owned a 200w 7.1 surround sound system (200w per speaker). While this unit does not replace the sound from that system it does sound incredible and is well worth the loss in sound quality for the freedom from wires and the speakers crowding my living room. I have compared over 30 different brands and listened to the offerings that are available. This is by far the biggest bang for your buck. I have not found any that can even compare to the sound quality from this unit. Plenty of connections and HDMI for most people and easy set up. Spend just a little time researching and I think you'll come back to this Yamaha. It's a winner.

Good sound, complex setup, poor design of inputs, DVD video does not pass through

by P. Li from MD, USA on 2010-04-16
1) Interms of sound quality, I am no audiophile. But I think the sound is good enough for my ears. I like the integrated design, so my entertainment center is not so cluttered.2) But the setup steps are very complicated. Maybe all of these systems are the same. But I bet a lot of people out there may be completely lost and intimidated by the thick book of instruction and tedious set up process.3) The input/output panel (where you plug all the wires) is poorly situated. You cannot see the inputs if you don't flip the system, which is very heavy. The input/outputs are all out of sight except the three HDMI plugs. Maybe Yamaha intentionally designed it this way so the cables are out of the sight. But it is in the back of the system. They are out of the sight anyway.4) The DVD video input has some problem. It does not pass the video signal to the TV. Basically I did as the instruction says: I connected my DVD player to the system (DVD video/audio out to the system), and I connected the system to my TV (system video/audio out to TV video/audio in). Audio works perfectly. But video does not get pass-through. I have no idea why. I also connected my Wii through Aux 1. That did not have any problem. Obviously I can connect the DVD video directly to my TV. But I want to use this system as the central gateway. And the system was designed to serve that purpose. I think the system has a malfunctioned DVD video input (the regular RCA video input/yellow colored).I am ordering component video cables to see whether that the video will pass through component video inputs. I will update you once I find out.

Perfectly capable to be used for surround sound and a/v receiver

Coupled with a subwoofer, this is perfect for the person who wants a movie experience without the overload of multiple speakers, receivers and wires. You can't go wrong, best surround bar on the market.

I used to love mine...

by Wambli Ska from USA on 2010-07-15
Sound Quality is OUTSTANDING and it is easy to use, setup and programm. I gave it only 3 stars because I bought it two years ago for $1,600 and loved the way it worked. UNFURTUNATELY I just upgraded to the Samsung 3-D TV setup and I was just notified by Yamaha that this soundbar will NOT pass through 3-D HDMI signals So it will become a VERY Expensive iPod cradle... THAT SUCKS!!!

Practical!

by B. Atighechi from on 2010-04-25
My thoughts on this unit are as follows...very easy to set up Nice looking very practical much-much better than any TV speaker great for bedrooms/dens/offices ***However**** If anyone wants to go the easy route of buying this for true/dynamic surround sound,,,think again. Under no circumstances, this will replace a 5 speaker system! Compared to a good 5.1--7.1 system, the YSP sounds contained and weak. For this amount of $$$$ you can buy an receiver/sub/and 5 bookshelf speaker that can beat this any day.

Pretty Much What I Expected

by Mikhal from on 2010-01-06
Six months ago I bought a Sony S-Air wireless surround w/blu-ray, a total POS! If this soundbar hadn't been priced at $1,000 then it would've been my 1st choice, Anyway, this system gives what I expected (I've got doorways/windows/drapes for interference)a roomful of sound, even tho' not really surround. Got the Yamaha sub-woofer free. One complaint, remote was non-op and I had to return to Yamaha, on my dime, before I could set up system. 10 day delay, Amazon no help! BTW, hooked up with an LG 390 Blu-Ray DVD player (worth every $$).

Great product but some oddities

by Philip J. Mayo from Santa Clara, CA on 2009-12-02
I am still playing with many of the features but already there are some oddities that may give buyers pause.Tuning FM stations and setting preset is done oddly from the supplied remote. I cannot even begin to describe it. It is not at all intuitive. The remote allows you to control a TV and another AV device but is very limited. For example, changing the input source on my Samsung LCD TV requires selecting enter after you scroll through a list of sources. The TV controls provided on the remote include only a few TV control buttons, none which are enter or select, so I can bring up and scroll through the source list but I cannot close it. I am still switching between remotes. This is of course a mix of Samsung and Yamaha oddities. There is no system connection terminal port to support the YST-FSW050 subwoofer being promotionally offered with the YSP-3000. There is no system control port at all. Odd with the YSP-3000 acting an AV receiver substitute. The height is just a bit too high for placing it on the same surface with many LCD televisions. I know the technology may be the limiter, but there could have been some effort to shorten the height to accomodate most of the televisions being sold. All the connections except the HDMI connections face down. The gap provided for connectors is not always ideal. I have had to substitute my Monster Toslink cables with more generic cables because the terminator on the Monster cables are too long to fit underneath. I could see other cable terminations suffering a similar limit. They provided a stick-on cable clip but no suggestions on best placement. I put mine in a spot I thought ideal and discovered after it would have been better rotated 90 degrees. Unfortunately the tack on the stick-on is so high, I cannot even attempt to remove it without tools.I may discover more oddities as I go, but I thought I'd let you know there are oddities to consider. Yamaha makes a solid product but then controlling, configuring, and placing the product may frustrate many.

Great Sound

by J. Brandt from Concord, Calif. on 2008-12-20
I bought this about 7 month ago when I got my first 50" plasma screen. Very good sound, lots of settings for differentsounds. Farily easy to set up. NO PROBLEMS at all.

Good but not perfect

by H. Jiang from Edison, NJ USA on 2007-10-19
When I first heard about the Digital Sound Projector from Yamaha I thought it would be a prefect solution for my family room where I do not (or cannot) run the cables to hook up rear (L/R) speakers. I pre-ordered YSP-3000 from Amazon in September 2007.I have the YSP-3000 hooked up in my family room for more than a week now, here is the list of good and bad about the device:The good:- Excellent sound quality with Dolby Digital 5.1 supported sources such as my digital cable box (via HDMI interface/cable). - Setup is easy. You ran Intelibeam from the device; in less than 20 mins you got a customized sound projecting environment. You can always tweak the settings manually but I found the auto-setting works just fine. - YSP-3000 also functions as HDMI switch (1 output, 2 inputs) where you can switch audio/video between DVD player and cable TV without selecting input source from your TV set. That is, connect the output HDMI port off YSP-3000 to your TV, then connect your cable box and DVD players to YSP-3000. You only need to use the YSP-3000 remote to choose between DVD and cable box.The bad:Here is my biggest problem with YSP-3000. It does NOT support newer version of Dolby Digital TrueHD, nor Dolby Digital Plus off the box!!I hooked up a Toshiba HD DVD player (model# HD-A30), and guess what, my audio channel on YSP-3000 became 2-channel stereo instead of 5.1. To by pass this problem, I had to hook-up my DVD player using optical audio connection as oppose to HDMI, and change the video output from HDMI to component video output. By doing so, I no longer can switch between DVD and cable using YSP-3000, and (in theory) receiving less quality image because I cannot use HDMI for my DVD.I contacted Yamaha support, I was told that YSP-3000 does not indeed support Dolby Digital TrueHD nor Dobly Digital Plus, which have became the standard audio format for every HD DVD movie shipped out there. My Toshiba HD DVD player only offers three choices of audio output 1) AUTO (which is the one I am using, and it is recommend for digital sound), 2) PCM (which is 2-chanael, not 5.1 with surround sound, and 3) Downmix PCM, which is also 2-channel instead of 5.1.So I have the latest Digital Sound Projector (YSP-3000), with latest HD DVD player (Toshiba HD-A30), with latest HD-DVD movies yet I cannot enjoy 5.1 sound environment without downgrading my video output from HDMI to component. That's a shame. I hope there will be a firmware upgrade in the future with either Yamaha or Toshiba devices (by the way, I already updated the firmware on Toshiba HD DVD player to v1.1, which is the latest as to date) to provide support of DD+, or DD TrueHD.
